History of Domvs Romana

This Roman residence, built in the 1st century BC, likely belonged to an aristocratic family during Malta’s time as part of the Roman Empire. It was accidentally discovered in 1881 during construction works, revealing one of the finest examples of Roman domestic architecture in the region.

Today, the site and its museum help visitors understand how the island’s elite once lived, long before the medieval and knightly period for which Malta is better known.

Where it is

Domvs Romana is located in Rabat, just outside the walls of Mdina, Malta’s former capital.

It is very easy to combine a visit here with a walk through Mdina’s narrow streets and viewpoints.

The site is well signposted, and you can reach it on foot from Mdina or by public transport and taxi from other parts of the island.
