History of Fort St. Elmo
Fort St. Elmo was built in 1552 by the Order of St. John to defend the Great Harbour entrance. During the Great Siege of Malta it played a vital role, resisting Ottoman attacks for weeks before falling.
Although the fort was eventually defeated, its resistance provided crucial time for the Knights, helping lead to Malta's ultimate victory. Today, the restored fort and the National War Museum narrate this history through original exhibits and unique artifacts.
