History of the Lascaris War Rooms
This underground complex was excavated during World War II beneath the fortifications of Valletta to serve as the Allied command centre. From here, the defence of Malta was coordinated during intense Axis bombings – Malta became one of the most heavily bombed places of the war.
The Lascaris War Rooms also played a key role in planning the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, making this site one of the most important wartime nerve centres in the Mediterranean.
Where it is
The Lascaris War Rooms are located directly beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, carved into the rock of the city’s historic fortifications. From the gardens above you get some of the best views over the Grand Harbour, and from there it is just a short walk down to the entrance. It is easy to combine a visit here with a stroll through Valletta’s streets, viewpoints and nearby museums.
