History of the Malta Maritime Museum
Housed in a former 19th-century British naval bakery, the Malta Maritime Museum tells the story of the islands’ long relationship with the sea.
Its collections trace Malta’s role as a maritime hub from the time of the Phoenicians, through the era of the Knights of St John, and into the period of the British Empire. Together, the building and its exhibits show how ships, trade and naval power have shaped Malta’s history.
Where it is
The Malta Maritime Museum is located in Birgu (Vittoriosa), one of the historic Three Cities, right by the harbour. From the waterfront promenade you can easily reach the museum on foot, and it is simple to combine a visit here with exploring Birgu’s narrow streets, fortifications and marina. Ferries and buses connect the Three Cities with Valletta and other parts of the island, making this an accessible stop for a day by the water.
