About

Carnival in Malta is a traditional festival celebrated before Lent. During these days there are parades, costumes, and colorful floats filled with music. It's a very joyful celebration where people come out to have fun and is an important part of Maltese culture.

When it Happens

It takes place in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday (usually February or March, depending on the year).​ 

Main Locations

Valletta (the biggest and most organized celebrations) Nadur (more alternative, spontaneous, and wild)

What to Expect

Large, colorful floats Costumes and masks Dance groups and parades Music, confetti, and a lively atmosphere

Vibe

Valletta: family-friendly and structured Nadur: more chaotic, satirical, and nightlife-focused

Parade Route

  1. Starts near the city entrance (Valletta Gate)

  2. Moves through central streets like: Republic Street Merchants Street

  3. Ends around key open areas, especially: St. George’s Square

  1. Float parades (day and night)

  2. Costume competitions

  3. Dance performances in public squares

  4. Night lighting shows

  5. Street parties

Useful Tips

  1. Arrive early to get a good spot

  2. Wear comfortable shoes (you’ll walk a lot)

  3. Dressing up is highly recommended

  4. Great for photos

  5. Traffic in Valletta gets busy → better to use public transport
